10 Ways to Make Your Computer Faster
A considerable number of factors can affect a computer’s performance, such as the amount of memory available, the number of files and applications installed, and the presence of viruses or spyware. Simple fixes, such as uninstalling a program, running an antivirus program or adjusting default settings, can make a computer work much faster.
Increase RAM
Random Access Memory (RAM) acts as temporary storage space for the computer while it is on. Before you install more programs on your computer, it is important to find out if there is enough memory to run them efficiently. If the memory is inadequate, the program will run slowly or even freeze. The more RAM you have on your computer, the faster it will run.
Clear Unused Files
Files that you do not use occupy valuable space and slow down the computer’s performance. Delete files you do not need, especially those in the recycle bin. You can also use your computer’s disk cleanup tool to perform this task.
Go to Start, select Programs and click on the Accessories folder. Click on System Tools and choose Disk cleanup. Select the files you wish to clean up to begin the process.
Defragment the Hard Drive
Computers store fragments of files in available spaces. Bringing these fragments back together will lessen the amount of time it will take for the computer to locate them. Click Start, select Programs, choose the Accessories folder and click System Tools. Select Disk Defragmentation. Click on the Defragmentation button to start the process.
Use Anti-Spyware Programs
Spyware is a type of software that is quietly downloaded to your system while you are browsing the Internet. It is used to collect personal data, such as your name, passwords and financial information. Very often, these programs cause computers to slow down in their performance.
Run an Anti-Virus Program
Many viruses will cause a computer to slow down, in addition to deleting files or crashing the computer. Have an anti-virus software, such as Norton or McAfee, installed and running at all times.
Disable Startup Programs
During their installation, several programs are programmed to launch when your computer starts. They will continue to run in the background, taxing your system’s resources, until you shut them off. Disabling these programs will speed up your computer’s performance.
Click Start, go to Run, type “msconfig” and click “OK.”
Identify the programs that should launch when you start your computer, such as your antivirus software, and disable the rest.
Click “OK” and restart your computer.
Visual Effects
Fanciful visual effects in Windows, such as shadows under the menus, use a lot of memory and space. You can turn these off in Performance Options.
Click Start, select Run, type sysdm.cpl and press Enter.
Click the Advanced Settings tab, then select Settings.
Select the Visual Effects tab, choose Custom and deselect all the visual display options you do not want.
Click “OK” and close the box to apply your settings.
Remove Preinstalled Software
It is a common practice for manufacturers to sell computers with various applications preinstalled. Uninstall the programs you do not need.
Boot Time
Make Windows start up faster with programs such as Bootvis and Serel.
Windows Defender
This program, included with recent versions of Windows, protects your computer from spyware. However, if you also have an anti-spyware program running then there is no need for Windows Defender.
Tip:
Try other options if these remedies are unsuccessful. Contact the computer manufacturer if you still have a warranty on your computer. Company technicians can assist you over the phone, online or in person at your home. The service and parts, if necessary, are covered by the warranty. If your warranty has expired, then consider hiring an experienced computer technician. Service is usually billed per hour.
