How to Apply for NCLEX
The National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) tests entry-level nurses on their knowledge of nursing practices, as well as their skills and other abilities required to practice nursing safely. Pearson Vue is the organization responsible for conducting this examination. There are testing centers around the United States and in some international locations.
Download an application for the NCLEX. This application form is available from the website of your local board of nursing (see Resources below).
Complete and submit your application to the board of nursing in your state. Include fingerprints, a recent passport photograph, and the appropriate fees.
Meet eligibility requirements for the NCLEX examination. Registered nurses must have a diploma, Associated degree or Baccalaureate degree in Nursing. Have your school send a copy of your transcript to the board of nursing to which you are applying.
Register for the NCLEX exam with Pearson Vue, the organization responsible for administering the NCLEX examination. You can register and pay for the exam at the Pearson Vue website (see Resources below).
Wait for confirmation of your eligibility to take the NCLEX exam. Once your eligibility has been confirmed, you will receive your Authorization to Test (ATT) from Pearson Vue. The ATT contains your test authorization number, your identification number, and the expiration date. You must present it at the examination center to be admitted.
Make an appointment to take the NCLEX examination. Test centers fill up quickly so consider making an appointment as soon as you receive your ATT.
Obtain more information. Visit the National Council of State Boards of Nursing to find contact information for the Board of Nursing in your state. You can also find helpful information at Pearson Vue, including a candidate bulletin, information on the NCLEX process, and an online tutorial(see Resources below).
Tip:
Pearson Vue corresponds by email only. You will receive your ATT, confirmation of your registration and other information via email.
Be prepared to spend six hours taking the NCLEX-RN exam. The NCLEX-PN exam lasts for five hours.
The examination consists of multiple-choice questions given in a computerized format.
Warning:
You should receive your ATT within two weeks of registering for the NCLEX. If you do not receive it within this time, you must call Pearson Vue.
