How to Bake Sunflower Seeds
Although considered wildflowers, sunflowers have a variety of uses. The flowers can be processed to make sunbutter or bread and are colorful additions to flower bouquets. The seeds can be used to make oil, food for birds and feed for livestock. Sunflower seeds are also a simple and healthy snack.
Pour the sunflower seeds, still in their shells, into a bowl.
Mix salt and water together. For every quart of water, use 1/8 to ¼ cup of salt.
Pour the salt water into the bowl with the seeds. The water should cover the seeds completely. Let the seeds soak overnight.
Drain the water from the seeds the next day. Use an absorbent cloth to pat the sunflower seeds dry. Place the seeds in an even layer on a cookie tray. You can also use a shallow pan.
Heat the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the pan of sunflower seeds into the oven and bake for 30 to 40 minutes. The seeds will be a golden brown when they are ready. Stir them once in a while for an even color.
Remove the seeds from the oven when they are ready and set them aside to cool. Place the seeds in an airtight container for storage.
Tip:
If you plan to eat your sunflower seeds immediately, you can add some butter or seasonings while they are still warm.
Baked sunflower seeds can be stored in the freezer for up to a year.
Warning:
If sunflower seeds are not stored in an airtight container they will become rancid.
