How to Write a Career Objective
A career objective is an applicant’s employment goal and it sets a tone for the rest of the resume. Hiring managers often base their judgment of an applicant’s abilities on this section of the resume. An impressive career objective can get a candidate through the door.
State the kind of position and job title you desire. Broad statements without a definite job title create confusion. An employer is more likely to toss such a resume aside than try to figure out the best position for its owner within the company.
Highlight important achievements and abilities. Hiring managers have little time to read through the large numbers of resumes they receive regularly so they scan the career objective section in search of skills relevant to the position they need to fill. If your abilities appear to be relevant to the job, you are more likely to be invited for an interview.
Keep your career objective concise. Although this section of your resume should contain information that attracts the hiring manager, it should be as short as possible. The ideal length for a career objective is one sentence.
Define your objective clearly. Use words and grammar that make your statements straightforward and easy to understand.
Use descriptive words that make an impression. Use terms that are associated with your industry and the position for which you are applying.
Write from the employer’s point of view and focus on the benefits of hiring you. For instance, avoid writing statements like “Accomplished executive seeking a position that offers growth.” Instead, consider writing statements like “Results-oriented leader with proven ability to increase sales.”
Rewrite your career objective for every position to which you apply. Read the description and requirements of the job you are interested in and then write a new career objective to match.
Improve your resume. There are a large variety of tools you can use to build an outstanding resume. These include software, such as “Winway Resume Deluxe 12 Mini” by Nova Development US and “Resume Magic: Trade Secrets of a Professional Resume Writer” by Susan BrittonWhitcomb (see Resources below). Tip:
Avoid using the word “I” when writing your career objective.
Warning:
Make your resume truthful and accurate to avoid misrepresenting yourself. Your credibility will be in doubt if it is discovered later that the information you gave is false.
Avoid applying for jobs for which you do not qualify. Hiring managers can easily spot applicants who are over-qualified or under-qualified for the available position. This may ruin possible future opportunities with the company.
